DTV Transition Notes

SBE Chapter 125
Jackson, MS
Meeting Notice for December 11, 2008
MPB Auditorium 11:30 am until 1:00pm

The ATSC digital TV signal is very new to most of us. It is significantly different than the familiar NTSC signal and as such, requires different tools to analyze it.

Constellation diagrams, CCDF plots, and MER, EVM, & BER are displays & terms that help describe the quality of the transmitted signal and quantify the performance of the DTV transmitter & transmission system.

Additionally, the syntax & quality of the MPEG transport stream that modulates the transmitter are critically important to error free delivery of programming.

This presentation will explain the measurements needed to verify the validity of ATSC signals and will show how these measurements are made using a modern test instrument.

There will be a few Power Point slides to introduce the DTV Analyzer followed by a practical demonstration of 8VSB analysis, MPEG analysis, and spectrum analysis of received local DTV signals.

Presenter: Tom Jordan, Rohde & Schwarz
